Lyrics Analysis Ms Georgiou

Shani 'Hold Me' Lyrics Analysis

Below are the lyrics of the song by 'Shani', 'Hold Me'. I will then evaluate what the song is about as well as what the artist has come to represent through the lyrics of the song and what it is telling the audience about the artist including the mise en scene. The first verse is as follows;

Boy you waan fi hold me
Put your arms right arounddd me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

While analysing the lyrics within the song by 'Shani' it becomes clear to the audience that she is singing about lust, love and relationships as well as sexual references. When 'Shani' is singing 'Boy you waan fi hold me' she is telling the audience that she wants to be held along with the lyrics that follow, 'Put your arms right arounddd me' which also shows a representation between an intimate relationship. These lyrics follow the conventions of the Reggae genre because lust and love are big elements that a lot of artists use throughout their work. Also the final row of lyrics in the verse are, 'Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life' this references a sexual perception which again links in with the generic conventions consumers expect to see and hear. In this part of the song our artist will be laying on her bed on her computer watching a video on YouTube by her lover ‘Gyptian’ who this song is dedicated too because it is a reply back to the original version of the song by Gyptian. Outfit worn is ripped black leggings with a plain white vest top, blue crop jean jacket and pink converse trainers.

Second Verse:

Boy you waan fi just squeeze me
Put di ting right around me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

Again when 'Shani' is singing 'Boy you waan fi squeeze me' it is telling the audience the same thing as the first verse, that she wants to be held tightly. 'Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life' is a repetition of the first verse, this is done continually throughout the song to build on the feel of the song as well as to make it catchy so that consumers can remember the lyrics. In this part of the song our artist will notice something on the side of her dresser and will walk over to a Tiffany &Co gift bag. Outfit worn is ripped black leggings with a plain white vest top, blue crop jean jacket and pink converse trainers.

Third Verse:

Your eye dem dry and u na care
So you can give it anytime and anywhere
Inna de square
So we na care
Mi a yuh woman so mi haffi be there

In this next verse the lyrics become more emotional towards the feelings 'Shani' has within the song. As she sings, 'Your eye dem dry and u na care' this means that the person she is singing about has shown no emotion as he/her has not cried and they do not care. This line references relationships and is something consumers in a relationship are going to be able to relate to. The next three lines, 'So you can give it anytime and anywhere, Inna de square, So we na care' shows a representation between intimacy and the subculture of today's society and the artists within the music industry that follow mainstream perceptions of relationships, love, sex and lust. The final line in this verse 'Mi a yuh woman so mi haffi be there' shows the dedication that partners put into their relationships as 'Shani' is singing that she is his/her woman so she has to be there, not that she may be there, she has to be. This again allows all age groups and genders to relate to the lyrics within the song as well as creating history between the artist and the consumers. In this verse of the song our artist is sitting on her bed opening up the present which must have been secretly placed their by ‘Gyptian’, she discovers it is a necklace and just keeps on staring at it and holds it up against her neck. Outfit worn is ripped black leggings with a plain white vest top, blue crop jean jacket and pink converse trainers.

Fourth Verse:

Well you seh you want a girl who will tek u away
Baby come behind me let me wine pon u
Wid it gooddd
You haffi feel itt
I'll have you comin back for more

The fourth verse consists of lust and the feeling of being loved. I am able to tell this from the following lyrics, 'Well you seh you want a girl who will tek u away, Baby come behind me let me wine pon u'. These lyrics show what relationships are based on as well as what individuals expect to get out of a relationship. In this verse the song is concept based due to the perception of relationships working out perfectly. I am also able to pick up on this from the last line in the verse 'I'll have you coming back for more', this again relates back to the perception of having a perfect relationship. The middle part of the verse, 'Baby come behind me let me wine pon u, Wid it gooddd, you haffi feel itt' shows a sexual reference once again that creates a link between the type of genre the song and artist is based within. For this verse of the song our artist has had an outfit change and is looking at herself in mirror dancing to the music whining low to match the lyrics, she is also wearing the necklace which ‘Gyptian’ brought for her and she keeps touching it whilst looking in the mirror, there is also a change in shot with this verse for the last lyric line which is a close up of her singing to the camera singing ‘Ill have you coming back for more’. Outfit worn for this verse is a dark green all in one, with a crop waist jean coat and black suede heels, with the Tiffany necklace.

Fifth Verse:

Boy you waan fi hold me
Put your arms right arounddd me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

This next verse is a repetition of the first verse which is done continuously as the chorus. This part of the song makes it narrative based because it is telling the audience a story about love. For this part of the song our artist is now in change of location in a white based room, she is dancing up against the wall whilst singing the chorus straight at the camera. Outfit for this verse was a change again, she was now in a very elegant blue big shouldered dress and black open toe leather boot heels, with the necklace on.

Sixth Verse:

Boy you waan fi just squeeze me
Put di ting right around me
Mi no se me give u di tightest grip u eva did see in your life

The first two lines in this verse is repeated throughout the song, however the last line is changed to suit the change in narration. The last line, 'Mi no se me give u di tightest grip u eva did see in your life' allows the audience to imagine holding someone tight and having a grip on them as well as not wanting to let go. Throughout the song some of the verse's are put together from different lines from each verse to create something new and innovative that consumers will find catchy and expressive. For this part of the song the location was changed again and our artist now is laying back down on her bed which has white silk sheets with loads of red rose petals gathered around, she starts off by singing into the camera again with different hand movements and even grips hold of the bed sheets to match the lyrics as shown above. Outfit for this was another elegant dress which was white with one shoulder very floosy, the necklace on again, red lipstick and a white flower in her hair, no shoes needed to be worn for this shot.

Seventh Verse:

I a bike mi a ride like voom voom voom voom
Cock up mi bump up a boom boom boom boom
Lift it up n drop it back badoom boom boom boom
No time to play around boy jus get in my room

This next verse contains a lot of onomatopoeia within the verse. Onomatopoeia can be defined as the creation of a name that sounds like what it refers to, an example of this is snap, crackle and pop. In this case voom voom voom voom is the onomatopoeia which is in the first line within the verse. This creates an automatic image in the audience’s head that can be related to a motorbike or a car. In this verse, also the ending in each line is with an 'oom' this makes the lyrics easy to catch on to which is the aim of many music labels in order for their songs to stick in consumer’s heads. As 'Shani' sings 'Cock up mi bump up a boom boom boom boom, Lift it up n drop it back badoom boom boom boom, No time to play around boy jus get in my room’, we become increasingly aware of the conventions of the song from the type of genre it is in. As a result of this the audience are able to perceive a performance based element. The reason for this is because the lyrics and the tempo of the song is upbeat which makes the audience feel they can dance to the music. For this part of the song the shot goes back to another shot in the white based room, but this time as she sings ‘lift it up and drop it’ she goes up and down the screen which helps her represent the lyrics clearly with her dancing. Outfit for this verse was a change again, she was now in a very elegant blue big shouldered dress and black open toe leather boot heels, with the necklace on.

Eighth Verse:

Me out a control
A real man me want in mi soul
Man mi no u ah di one so no politic on yuh
Di gyal who could hold u down

'Me out a control, A real man me want in mi soul', both of these lines within the verse show a representation between everyday life that people want to be happy and loved. In conclusion to this music is about expressing what artists feel so that the audience can relate to those emotions. For this part of the song we go back to the shot of her laying on the white silk sheets but a side view/close-up we decided to repeat certain shots in the video because we realized that many of the verses throughout the song where repeated so this way the video will match with the lyrics, in this shot the audience can only see her face which is turned to the side and she is singing straight at the camera. Outfit for this was another elegant dress which was white with one shoulder very floosy, the necklace on again, red lipstick and a white flower in her hair, no shoes needed to be worn for this shot.

Ninth Verse:

Mami waan fi hold yuh
Put di ting right arounddd me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

Tenth Verse:

Boy you waan fi just squeeze me
Put di ting right around me
Mi no se me give u di tightest grip u eva did see in your life

Eleventh Verse:

I a bike mi a ride like voom voom voom voom
Cock up mi bump up a boom boom boom boom
Lift it up n drop it boy badoom boom boom boom
No time to play around boy jus get to my room

Twelfth Verse:

Me out a control
A real man me want in mi soul
Man mi no u ah di one so no politic on yuh
The one who could hold you downnn

Thirteenth Verse:

Hoooold yuh
Put your arms right arounddd me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

Fourteenth Verse:

Boy you waan fi just squeeze me
Put di ting right around me
Mi no se me give u di tightest grip u eva did see in your life

Fifteenth Verse:

Your eye dem dry and u na care
So you can give it anytime and anywhere
Inna de square
So we na care
Mi a yuh woman so mi haffi be there

From the ninth to the fifteenth verse each stanza has been repeated so that consumers are able to pick up on the tune and style of the song. Also for this part of the song from the verses 9 to 15 the shots just kept on changing from the white based room to her lying on the white bed silk sheets and also the shots repeatedly went back to the shots of her looking at herself in the mirror and then a close-up in the green outfit. The outfits remained the same throughout these shots.

Sixteenth Verse:

Well you seh you want a girl who will tek u away
Baby come behind me let me wine pon u
Wid it gooddd
You haffi feel itt
I'll have you comin back for more

This verse consists of lust when 'Shani' sings 'Well you seh you want a girl who will tek u away'. Lust is defined as a craving for sexual intimacy which is part of the narration for this song. The rest of the verse emphasizes the feeling of lust for example; the way the 'gooddd' is dragged out to make the word sound emphasized. For this part of the song we changed the location once again with our artist outside of her house walking towards her car and then she gets into the car. Then there is another change in shot where the camera is filming her inside of the car driving but she isn’t singing the song is just being played. Outfit for these shots was the same which was black acid wash leggings with a pink netted vest top, the same crop jean waistcoat with black suede heels, the necklace and her car keys.

Seventeenth Verse:

Boy you waan fi hold me
Put di ting right arounddd me
Mi no se me give u di tightest hole u eva did see in your life

Eighteenth Verse:

Boy you waan fi just squeeze me
Put di ting right around me
Mi no se me give u di tightest grip u eva did see in your life
I a bike mi a ride

Finally, the seventeenth and eighteenth verse are used to sum up the song as it ends and the music fades into the background. For these last two verses of the song the shots where back and fourth to the silky white bed sheets and the white based room and then the final change in shot was a long shot which was of her walking beside a river very late at night with all candles lit up around the river, as she just lifts her arm up walks towards the camera, the song finishes and then we have the actual sound of that shooting played in the video because we though it went very well with the video as she gets nearer to the end of her walking the song slowly fades into the background. Outfits for these shots are the same as above, and the outfit for her by the river is again in the white elegant one shouldered dress, black suede heels, with a white flower in her hair.

Overall me and my group members will try to connect the music video with our target audience by, matching the camera shots with the song, so for example as shown above the lyrics are continueously repeated throughout the song, so to connect the music video with the song we have continueously repeated certain shots and locations throughout our music video. Also we have tried to connect with our target audience by having the music video based on the artist and the artist only because we want to show her true emotions and personality to the target audience. We also wanted to portray Shani the artist to being a very sweet and innocent young woman, just generally singing to this boy that she loves. In our video we have different camera shots of Shani opening a present from Gyptian who is her secret lover, and then she wears this necklace throughout the video to show how much she cares for him. Finally there is a camera shot in our music video which shows a point of view shot of Shani watching her lover 'Gyptian' on her computer screen and her just laying on her bed thinking about him. Finally at the end of our music video there is the last camera shot which shows Shani in a very beautiful white elegant dress walking towards the camera , whcih then leads to a panning shot of her walking away from the camera, with this shot we tried to show to the target audience that Shani has amde her decission and she wants to be alone and independant and she isnt going back to her lover, this is way she walks away from the camera alone.

Development Of The Artist Ms Georgiou

Artist's Background Information:

  • Gyptian is the name the artist is known for by his fans
  • Birth name : Windel Beneto Edwards
  • Born 25 October 1983, age 26
  • Birth Location : St. Andrews, Jamaica
  • Genres : Reggae, Roots reggae, Lovers rock, Reggae fusion
  • Years active : Present since 2003
  • Labels : Real Lyfe Music Productions and So So Def Recordings
  • Associated acts : Lutan Fyah, I-Wayne, Bascom X, Sizzla, Chuck Fender, Nicki Minaj

Gyptian's development:

Started by him becoming recognised by Mr. Wong and Earl Chinna Smith, Gyptian honed his sound, winning the 2004 Star Search talent competition at Kens Wild Flower Lounge in Portmore, earning him a spot at Sting 2004, dubbed the 'greatest one night reggae show on earth'. Gyptian then earned his nickname from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair like an Egyptian pharaoh. Soon after this In 2005 he scored two hits, "Is There A Place" on the Seasons Riddim and "Serious Times". The Gyptian worked hard and was then nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards, the twenty-three year old singer has been dominating the Jamaician charts with hits including "Is There a Place", "Beautiful Lady", and the chart-topping ballad, "Mama, Don't Cry". Then on 12 September 2006, Gyptian released his first album on VP Records. On 12 December 2007, Gyptian, while in New York, shot the music video for his new single, "I Can Feel Your Pain" which was produced by Jon FX. The song was the first to be confirmed to appear on his album "I Can Feel Your Pain" which was then released in 2008. As of the end of May 2010, his single "Hold Yuh" had peaked at number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 33 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, number 6 on the Heatseekers Songs Chart and had been at the top of the Reggae Digital Songs chart for nine consecutive weeks. Gyptian has been enjoying chart success with his new album, Hold Yuh, which continues to hold the 2nd spot on Billboard’s Reggae Albums Chart. The title track, “Hold Yuh,” has become a multi-chart hit worldwide and deemed a “2010 Summer Anthem.” According to Billboard Magazine “not since Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go," has an underground reggae artist garnered as much attention in the United States as Jamaica's own Gyptian.” So therefore because of his success Gyptian has started to create a much larger fan base for himself and this is one of the reasons why the artisit we are using Shani was signed up by Gyptian she was only known through youtube and thanks to this huge hit by gyptian Shani's version is doing very well. Finally to top Gyptian's development he has half the online popularity of Sean Paul and Shaggy who are still the most popular deejays.

Summary of how the reasearch will help plan your music video.

The research which i have discovered will help me plan my own music video because i can use the analysis from the videos which i analysed by Gyptian and take them on board for my own music video my trying to help convey the subculutres love, lust etc. So therefore because we have chosen the female version of this orignal song 'Hold yuh' we need to make sure that our music video is similiar to Gyptian's which was based mostly on him and alot of closeups and shots of his face whilst he is singing whcih help convey the narrative of the song and show the pyrics clearly to our target audience because our artist will be singing to her boyfriend who is Gyptian because she has written this song back to him. Overall the ideas which me and my group have for our own music video will work perfectly for the narrative of the song.

Video Analysis Ms Georgiou

The song we have chosen is Shani - 'hold me' , which is a remix of the original song by Gyptian - 'hold yuh' , so therefore because our artist Shani is still a newcomer i will be analysing 2 music videos by Gyptain.

The first music video which i analysed by Gyptian is:

Gyptian - 'Beautiful Lady' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmi2RZI8IDA

This music video starts with Gyptian standing by the beach singing out loud, then he is still by the beach but is sitting on a rock singing, then there is a flashback of this girl in a white wedding dress running through the sand and she keeps looking back and by her facial expression it shows that she is very upset and confused. Throughout this music video there are change in shots going back and forth to Gyptian sitting on the rock looking like he is watching and her and then it goes back to the girl in the wedding dress running through a green scenery. Then Gyptian is lying on top of her and he is singing to her whilst she is watching his lips this shot helps convey one of the subcultures which is love and showing affection for your partner. Soon after they are both standing in front of a wooden hut both dressed very smartly and she is holding one of his shoulders and dancing to the beat whilst he is just looking into the camera and dancing. Then it goes back to the shot of them by the beach but this time they are standing facing each other and Gyptian removes her wedding vial and then its back to them lying down on the sand together watching each others lips and then the camera just fades away from them into the sea. Finally near the end of the music video as they are both lying down they finally kiss each other and then Gyptian is left alone singing his heart out to her whilst she is sitting in the water looking back at him.

The second music video which i analysed by gyptian is:

Gyptian - 'I can feel your pain'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-amheZLjfE&feature=related

At the start of this music video Gyptian is getting out of his bed the lighting is very low which helps create the sad and low atmosphere with the audience. As he starts to sing he sits on a chair with his guitar in his hand singing with a lot of emotion saying 'i can feel your pain'. He is all alone which helps portray the atmosphere of him being lonely and also being in pain. As he starts singing 'let me make love to you' there is a shot of him and this pretty lady hugging each other and staring into each others eyes as he sings to her in her ears. He then starts to grab her face as he is singing the lyrics 'i can feel your pain' which is showing his emotion and he is making sure that she is listening to him. Then there is a shot of a limo in a different location which shows Gyptian getting out of the limo and walking through fans and then it shows him being interviewed by a presenter, he then is on stage singing and performing in front of thousands of people. As he is singing there are flashbacks of him performing on the stage, then a closeup of his face showing his facial expressions which make it look more like he is in pain. The video finishes with it showing the girl walking into her house in a nun outfit and Gyptian doesn't recognise her and she takes the hood of and just walks away from him and then the shot goes back to him in bed singing to himself.

Overall by analysing thse 2 music videos from the same artist who is categorised in the same genre as my own music video has helped me with what i need to include in my own music video and that reggae music videos are mostly narrative based , so therefore i will use this for my own music video making sure that the music video tells a story of the song to my target audience. Also i can relate both these music videos to Goodwins theory because firstly he said that Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics-what you would expect to see in this genre of video so therefore in the music video 'I can feel your pain' you expect to see Gyptian singing about someone and telling her that he can feel her name because of the name of the song. Also he said that there is a relationship between music and visuals-music matches speed, etc, of the video, so therefore because this music video by Gyptian is very slow there were slow shots being played which matched the music of the video. So finally i will make sure that i relate my own music video to these videos which i have nanalysed and i will make sure that my music video includes these key points from Goodwins theory which i have discovered.

Subculture Ms Georgiou

Subculture.

Grant Mc Cracken
Grant McCracken believes the postmodern world is full of diversity dynamism and creativity. He also says that if we were to look at the array of values, and ideologies then we can’t say all sub cultures come from one culture.

CCCs View
CCCs view is different to Grant McCracken, they say that it assumes that all subcultures come from one main culture (Reaction to mainstream).

Hebdige
Hebdige came to the conclusion that although some people think subcultures only appear to be different but deep down they are the same, he says if you look deeper, there is enough richness to warrant renaming ‘subcultures’ as ‘little cultures’

subculture is a group of people who are untied through common value system and tastes (clothes, music, politics etc). It is also a group who are positioned outside the mainstream. The subculture we are trying to identify is.

Beliefs And Values.

Shani's beliefs as an artist are that she doesn't want to be known as an artist who is a bad influence or bad person behind closed doors when she isn't actually singing, Her beliefs are to create an image to her fans of being a very new, recent and fashionable artist so therefore her target audience who are mostly females around the ages of 15 to 30 can follow her and even has her as their role model. With these beliefs and values me and my group will aim to include these into our music video by making sure she is dressed up in the latest clothes/fashion , she is also acting as a very innocent, sweet independant young woman , so therefore in our music video it will include Shani all alone just doing her own thing not needing no one else but herself and singing to her boyfriend.

Subculture values and beliefs of Shani are:

  • Love
  • Lust
  • Relationships

  • Sex

  • Spending time with your partner

  • Affection for your partner

  • Arguing with your partner
  • Sharing your emotions and feelings with your partner.

Questionnaire

As shown above is my questionnaire which i created, this questionnaire helped give me and my group members a specific idea and helped with giving us ideas for own music video.
The most popular genre was RnB and Reggae, this is one of the reason we decided to choose a song from the reggae genre.
With the artist question we had a selection of different answers , which also did help us a lot because we thought it didn't matter which artist we choose as long as the audience enjoyed the music video that was all that concerned the public.
Most people voted that they preferred to download music rather than buy Cd's and i think the reason for this is due to the change in technology , the younger generation of audiences would rather save up money for something else rather than having to pay for a CD they would rather just download it off the Internet for free.
Most people said that their favorite music artists music albums all are very eye catchy and this is one of the reason they spot the album in stores and then are interested in buying it.
The most popular watched music channel was MTV base and kiss , so therefore if we was to publish our music video onto the TV then we would defiantly choose to have it published on one of these music channels due to them being the most popular and being watched by our target audience we also voted for out genre(reggae).
On my questionnaire most people voted that in a music video by their favorite genre they expect to see a lot of dancing and real life locations such as a house, bedroom, the park. And from this information which we gathered we are going to use some of these locations to film our own music video. Most people voted that they prefer a performance based music video so because this concept was the most popular answer we are going to make sure that our own music video is performance based.
One of the most popular answers was that our target audience prefer solo artists to groups so therefore this is a very good piece of research for us because we have already decide on a solo artist so therefore it should do well with our target audience.
Overall my questionnaire which i created has been a very successful research source for my own music video because it has helped prove that the song, genre and artist which we have chosen to work with was a very good idea due to her matching up with the answers we collected from the audience.

Censorship Ms Georgiou

Censorship

Using all of the above points provide your own reasons, opinions and examples to the question – ‘should music videos be censored?’

I believe that music videos should not be censored because I believe that the only way an artist can express their feelings and emotions is through producing their music. For example we have the music artist Eminem who has been criticised a lot with the public and the media and I don’t think they have given him a chance to just express his feelings through his lyrics and music videos. One of Eminem’s songs was censored, the censored version even took out entire sentences because they were too sexually charged. Though there was a clean version of the song only on the PA version of the Album. However considering this Eminem still shouts "Mother fucker!" on the censored version. This therefore shows that they are not too bothered about the swearing which Eminem uses because even on the censored they still allow the phrase ‘mother fucker’ to be used and I think that this is a much stronger taboo word than many others.

Censorship
Censorship is the process whereby governing bodies can stop the publication of a product or text. Censorship of music can stop a song or video from being broadcasted on radio or television, i will make sure that this not occur with my own music video. Some institutions or artists choose to censor even if governing bodies do not.
Censorship of music can stop a song or video from being broadcasted on radio or television. Music censorship has been implemented by states, religions, educational systems, families, retailers and lobbying groups – and in most cases they violate international conventions of human rights. Aside from the usual justifications of pornography, language and violence, some movies are censored due to changing racial attitudes or political correctness in order to avoid ethnic stereotyping and ethnic offense despite its historical or artistic value. So therefore i will make sure that my music video will not contain any of these justifications.

Moral Censorship
The removal of materials that is obscene or otherwise morally questionable. Pornography, for example, is often censored under this rationale, especially child pornography, which is censored in most jurisdictions in the world. My music video will certainly not include any of the above.

Political Censorship
Occurs when governments hold back information from their citizens. This is often done to exert control over the populace and prevent free expression that might foment rebellion. My music video will not include any of the above.

Examples of Censorship
Self Censorship
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC)
Ofcom
